Sustainable Procurement
The environmental impact that we as
individuals, or as part of a wider community, have on our planet,
is an issue that will dominate the political agenda for the coming
decades. Sustainable procurement therefore requires organisations
to reflect on how the procurement choices they make now will affect
the quality of life of future generations, as well as current
operations.
VEGA's approach to sustainable procurement
VEGA has a heritage of providing independent
and expert advice that helps deliver best-practice procurement
across the public and private sectors. We therefore recognise that,
although by no means the only aspect of the procurement process,
failure to achieve the basic requirements of sustainability will be
considered as a serious flaw in any procurement proposal.
We understand that the benefit of sustainable
procurement is in achieving the right balance between the
environmental, social and economic impacts. As a consequence, the
emphasis is on modifying the process of procurement by
incorporating criteria which relate to a variety of sustainability
issues including:
- Impact of the product and source on the environment
- Levels of energy consumption implicit in the production
- Threat of resource depletion
- Impact of production on health and nature
- Waste disposal
At VEGA, we work alongside our clients to:
- Review a sustainability strategy and how it can be applied
- Review the extent to which concepts of sustainability are
embedded and part of the day-to-day life of the business – and
whether these are extended to partners in their supply chains
- Consider the environment in which the product is produced or
from which the service is delivered
- Review and assess the product or service itself, and its own
impact on matters of sustainability
