Understanding the Threat
Rightly identified by the UK National Security Strategy as a
Tier One security risk, the threat of attack on the UK cyberspace
is one that hangs over every aspect of modern life.
The outcome of a successful attack ranges from a temporary
inconvenience to crippling national disaster. Just as in the
physical world, the extent to which these attacks impact us is
dependent only on the intent, resources and capability of
protagonists.
The growing threats of organised, persistent, state-sponsored,
and politically motivated attacks are now targeting the key
technological assets of the UK public sector and economic
institutions. These attacks represent a real and present
social-political threat; penetrating strategic networks, stealing
valuable information, and infecting or over-riding those command
and control systems that protect or underpin our national
infrastructure.
While best practice information

anti-virus software protects against the vast majority of security
risks, specifically designed secure information sharing
infrastructures go further, providing even greater protection for
the most valued elements of an ICT-driven estate.
