Integration Services Support Environment (ISSE)
Integration Services Support Environment (ISSE) is a Unified
Modelling Language (UML) based enterprise architecture modelling
tool that supports the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) aim of
achieving a network enabled capability (NEC).
Charged with facilitating the transition to NEC, the MOD
Integration Authority quickly recognised the need for a suitable
architecture modelling tool and approach that could facilitate this
transition and meet the following high level requirements:
- Consistently model a complex, heterogeneous information-based
enterprise
- Create a repository of enterprise information
- Create consistent views of the enterprise architecture
- Facilitate the exploitation of models and views to manage
enterprise and interoperability issues
ISSE has been created specifically to provide an unambiguous
understanding, a precise definition and the ability to evaluate
large or complex enterprises. The application of ISSE is equally
effective in other vertical markets that must deal with issues of
technology or business complexity.
MODAF Compliant
VEGA has worked in partnership with the Integration Authority to
develop ISSE in line with key NEC enablers including:
- The MoD Architecture Framework (MODAF)
- The MoD Architecture Repository (MODAR)
ISSE’s software architecture is based on a client-server
relationship and database (or repository). It was designed to
provide a collaborative modelling environment that supports
disparate teams in creating, managing and introducing models into a
common enterprise repository. It is by linking these models and
elements together – under the governance of the MODAF meta-model
(M3) (or an alternative meta-model) – that an enterprise can be
truly exploited.
The concept of a meta-model has always been fundamental to ISSE
modelling and, as such, ISSE is M3 compliant.
Key Benefits of ISSE Modelling
A key principle of ISSE modelling is the full integration of a
meta-model into the modelling environment. This enables consistent
modelling of complex environments.
Unlike many other tools, ISSE has been designed to manage a very
large number of interconnected models. This enables the effective
and consistent modelling of very large and complex enterprises,
such as the MOD.
A major strength of ISSE is its query and exploitation
capability. ISSE modellers are able to exploit and analyse, in
depth, the information about the enterprise. This is facilitated
via ISSE’s built in query and reporting tools, and through separate
interrogation of the repository.
A true client-server implementation supports enterprise-wide
deployment. ISSE includes a comprehensive suite of configuration
and security controls in order to manage the user base effectively.
(NB a stand-alone version of ISSE is also available which is
compatible with the client-server implementation).
ISSE has been used within the MOD Integration Authority for many
years and VEGA has provided over 8,000 man days of architecture
modelling on behalf of the MOD. VEGA has also supported several
industry partners and other government agencies.
