VEGA-supported project wins NHS Bristol ‘Outstanding team’ award

21 April 2009 – An NHS project on which VEGA Consulting Services Ltd (VEGA), a Finmeccanica company, provided expert and strategic direction, has won the ‘Outstanding Team’ category at the NHS Bristol Awards 2009.

The Outstanding Team category is awarded to the team that has demonstrated its ability to work cohesively on a project or initiative (or simply on a daily basis) to produce excellent results. This year’s award was presented to the project team from the Bristol Primary Care NHS Trust (PCT) and Avon IM&T Consortium (AIMTC) that was responsible for the major relocation of the Trust’s headquarters and supporting IT and telecommunications infrastructure.

In order to minimise the risk to Bristol PCT's communications infrastructure during the relocation programme, VEGA was appointed to work closely with PCT executives to produce an IT Strategy covering all the technical, operational and cultural aspects of such a major change. The strategy also required VEGA to conduct an analysis of the latest technology to ensure the organisation was equipped and capable of providing its services efficiently and cost effectively in the long-term.

VEGA had responsibility for the design specification, procurement, implementation and acceptance of the complete voice solution. In addition, VEGA project managed the overall procurement, build and installation of the new IT infrastructure including virtualised servers, network-attached storage, new multi-functional devices, PCs, structured cabling and data networking systems that were critical to the programme’s success.

VEGA project manager, John Burrows, became an intrinsic part of the wider IT project team, which had a budget of £1.4m for the move. As a result of meticulous and detailed planning, all the tasks which needed undertaking prior to and during the move weekend were completed successfully, with all core IT systems being operational for 9am on the Monday. The IT move project team managed to deliver on time and within budget, demonstrating the competencies of both the department and the project manager. The technology implemented provides the organisation with an advanced infrastructure which is a robust and resilient platform that will help facilitate improved patient care.

Deborah Lee, Head of Commissioning for NHS Bristol, nominated AIMTC for the award and said: “My computer worked in King Square House on Friday and it still worked in South Plaza on Monday – what more can I say?”

Head of AIMTC, Andy Kinnear, thanked VEGA for its contribution: “We are thrilled that the hard work and commitment of our project team has been recognised. We would like to congratulate all involved. The award would not have been possible without the support we received from VEGA, in particular the work John Burrows undertook as Project Manager.”
