Major Events

The eyes of the world are already on London, with the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics just around the corner. Of course, the promise of an outstanding global sporting event conjures up incredible excitement for fans around the world keen to see their sporting heroes on TV or in person. Naturally, the security measures associated with such major events are also immense, and underpin the planning of any such activity, with the safety and security of athletes and supporters paramount.

The Olympic Games – the biggest sporting event by far – is just one of a host of high profile international sporting events taking place in the UK between 2010 and 2020. Others include Ryder Cups, the Champions League Final, ATP World Tour Finals, Rugby League World Cup, Commonwealth Games, Rugby Union World Cup, and the Cricket World Cup – all of which carry a range of security considerations, for competitors and spectators alike.

The UK Government’s London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Safety and Security Strategy identifies how it would achieve its promise of delivering a “safe and secure Games in keeping with the Olympic culture and spirit”. This is reinforced in the UK’s Strategic Defence and Security Review, which references the associated counter-terrorism measures being planned, including the cyber threat (Beijing experienced 12 million cyber attacks per day during the 2008 Olympics).

Many of these security issues will be common to all major events.

Over the past two decades, VEGA has developed a wide range of services aimed at addressing the varying security challenges in government and defence – markets where planning is essential, and failure is not an option. These capabilities include defining and mapping the complex interdependencies of an organisation comprising diverse and disparate components, as well as developing secure systems that enable the safe sharing and exploitation of information to enhance capability and improve the user experience.
