Systems Engineering and Integration Group (SEIG)

Systems Engineering and Integration Group (SEIG) (incorporating the former Integration Authority) is the body within Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) with overall responsibility for implementing an Architecture Modelling Service (AMS) to define, manage, and regulate a new ‘high-level’ NEC System of Systems (SoS) architecture for the MOD.

Challenge

As part of the Defence Technology Strategy, the UK MOD will “prosecute a design authority role for the overarching C4ISTAR architecture which it shall own and over which it shall exercise governance.” The Strategy adds: “Since the C4ISTAR system of systems extends across so much of defence capability, is informed by and informs defence doctrine, and will guide requirement setting and acquisition decisions, it requires ownership and design authority which can only rest with MOD.”

The SoS Architecture is therefore one of main strands that SEIG addresses and is a key enabler towards the realisation of Network Enabled Capability (NEC). The employment of an architectural approach to acquisition is pivotal to ensuring that military capability meets the front line operational requirement, through life. Additionally, the SEIG is responsible for implementing the governance regime to provide DE&S project teams with the direction necessary for them to ensure interoperability, and ultimately NEC are achieved.

How VEGA is helping

VEGA is working in partnership with SEIG staff to deliver this AMS, including delivering a set of coherent requirements through effective engagement with stakeholders; the NEC System of Systems Architecture design, the Architecture itself and supporting Procedures and Guidelines; an agreed Governance regime. This will collectively support the client’s robust assurance processes and through life capability management objectives.

In advance of fully rolling out the NEC SoS Architecture and Governance regime, VEGA is undertaking validation, testing and prototyping activities for SEIG, as well as supporting IPT projects and programmes during transition to the new AMS.

Value being delivered

As a result of VEGA’s support, SEIG is providing an AMS that is helping deliver:

  • A single and consistent point of reference to help facilitate interoperability across projects and programmes
  • Early identification of integration issues
  • Projects that align with strategic objectives for interoperability
  • Through life capability planning and requirements management support
