Central Government

Since the coalition government came into power in May 2010, 'reform' has been the buzzword. With the largest national budget deficit in Britain's peacetime history, the UK Government has had to implement radical measures to address the economic climate, and secure sustainable economic growth.

High amongst the radical reform of public services is the plan to redistribute power away from central government to the local level, as well as achieve the best possible value for taxpayers’ money. These are designed to make public services fit for the modern age, and deliver greater transparency and accountability, giving more power and responsibility to citizens, and enabling sustainable long-term improvements in services.

This extends to a consolidated approach to working together across government, including:

  • Sharing resources
  • Renegotiating a wide range of contracts
  • Establishing a central procurement and major projects approach which harnesses buying power to secure the best possible economy of scale whilst providing transparency and security

The drive for reform and value for money is moving all parts of Government to explore alternative and improved ways of service delivery. The Government ICT strategy emphasises leveraging open standards and existing IT provisions to support service delivery and provide economies of scale, such as on the Government Gateway and DWP ERP shared services. This is underpinned by improved delivery through agile methods on smaller but more effective programmes.
