Facing the largest national budget deficit in Britain's peacetime history, in May 2010 the coalition Government made the reduction of this £156bn figure, its top priority.

It set a target of reducing Government spending in its first financial year of office (2010-11) by £6.2bn. In light of such spending cuts, the challenge to public sector organisations was not just to ‘slash and burn’, but to find ways of delivering more for less and ensure essential government services remained intact and benefited those in most need.

In order to achieve this, and still meet such stringent efficiency targets, the UK Government is focusing on transforming the way government operates by:
