Business Continuity Planning and Management
What are Business Continuity Planning and Management?
Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and
Business Continuity Management (BCM) are essential parts of
safeguarding an effective preparation for and reaction to emergency
or disaster scenarios.
In April 2009, the outbreak of Swine Flu again
raised the need for adequate Business
Continuity Planning and Management. Both involve developing
advance business continuity arrangements and procedures that enable
an organisation to respond to an event in a manner that allows
business-critical functions to continue without interruption or
essential change.
UK Government's approach to Business Continuity Planning and
Management
The UK Government’s National Security
Strategy placed a renewed focus on Business Continuity Planning, with the
emphasis on implementing thorough, integrated and
well-practiced Business Continuity
Planning across government, CNI and Industry, to ensure the
integrity of UK PLC and the safety of UK citizens.
The requirement for detailed Business
Continuity Planning was further emphasised by the UK
Government’s apparent criticism of the World Health Organisation’s
(WHO) preparedness for a pandemic outbreak, an area both WHO and
the UK Government have been criticised for in light of the Swine
Flu outbreak.
