Why is sustainable procurement so important in the 21st
century?
As awareness increases with regard to the detrimental
environmental, social and economic impact that
individuals and communities have on our planet, there is a growing
recognition that constructive action must be taken to address
this.
Sustainable procurement is now
high on the political agenda in the UK and internationally, and
will remain so for the foreseeable future, as governments and
organisations consider how their procurement
choices will ultimately affect the quality of life of
future generations, as well as current operations.
In the UK, four priority areas have been identified for
immediate action:

- Climate Change and Energy
- Natural Resource Protection and Environmental Enhancement
- Sustainable Communities
Behavioural change is also recognised as being closely related
to the above priorities, which are likely to impact every element
of the UK's public sector, as well the private sector.
